Power of a Purse

Each Mother’s Day, Mothers & More reminds the world that the real work of caring for our families has social and economic value. It is truly our time to shine, to invite all mothers to become members and to promote the beliefs that make us so special and unique among so many other mother’s groups.

We created Power of a Purse in 2009 to spotlight mothers’ economic issues, in part by collecting new and gently used purses for mothers in need. A purse symbolizes a woman‘s economic power and many families rely on a mother‘s income. Mothers & More believes that no matter where a woman rests on the social ladder, there is “power in her purse” when she is able to provide for herself and her children. To date we have collected and distributed over 20,000 purses, and personal items to fill those purses, to mothers in tough financial circumstances.

2013: Your “Purse-onal” Story

2013 Press Release *PDF*

Every mother has a story. The day we first laid eyes on our baby. The sleepless nights fretting over a sick child. The joy of watching our little ones grow. The choices we make every day to try to give our families the best possible lives. These stories weave together the tapestry of motherhood. But when do we share our “purse-onal” stories? How often do we sit down with a friend over a cup of coffee and say, “So, what have you done lately to plan for your retirement?” Or, “How’s it going with sticking to that budget you finally found time to create last month?”

For Power of a Purse 2013, we will invite you to share your “purse-onal” stories. We want to hear about the memories that shaped your ideas about money. Your first piggy bank and how you filled it. What you did with the money you earned babysitting or flipping burgers. We want to know how you feel about your financial present and future. Are you confident that you have the resources to provide for yourself in 10, 20, 30 years? What would you do if you, or your partner, lost your job?

Now, this might not sound like as much fun as showing off your chic new purse, but, as women and mothers, we owe it to ourselves to have these discussions. Tell us about your “purse-onal” stories: powerofapurse@mothersandmore.org
